Choosing a Riding Jacket
The purpose of a riding jacket is, of course, to keep you warm and possibly protect you from wind and rain, but a riding jacket also needs to have a good fit and be comfortable enough to use in the saddle. It can be helpful to consider the following when choosing a riding jacket:- What season will the jacket be used for? Do you need a warm jacket, one that can withstand rain, or perhaps a lighter and windproof jacket? Jackets for the warmer seasons should be thin and functional, while jackets for the cold season should have warming details such as a high soft collar and cuffs at the sleeves to prevent wind and cold from getting in.
- Will the jacket primarily be used for riding or stable work, or both? For riding or if it will be worn for extended periods, it can be beneficial for the jacket to have good breathability if you get warm. We have several models that breathe well and keep you dry and comfortable.
- Does the jacket need a hood, or perhaps a detachable or stowable hood if you have a use for it but don't want it to get in the way during riding?
- Long or short style? During the colder season, many people prefer a longer jacket that also works well for riding with a practical split at the back. It's very comfortable to keep your legs/thighs warm when riding in cold weather. In that case, these models are an excellent choice.
