Mullen Mouth Eggbutt is a straight bridle bit with a port, also known as tongue relief. The bit has a slight curvature and is made of stainless steel, with a blue, steel-mixed Sweet Iron coating whose effect stimulates the chewing process and increases saliva production.
When the Sweet Iron material comes into contact with moisture, air, and warmth, an oxidation reaction called rusting occurs. The sweet iron coating will then rust, resulting in the bit's surface tasting sweet and becoming easier for many horses to accept. As oxidation occurs, the blue color of the bit will fade over time, but the sweet taste of the surface rust remains.
Straight bits provide more stability compared to, for example, a single jointed snaffle, and the small port puts pressure on the tongue.
Bits with fixed Eggbutt rings provide more stability in the horse's mouth compared to a bit with loose rings, which is more flexible and allows the horse to have some control over its position. Bits with fixed rings are usually recommended for young horses, horses in training, or horses having difficulty finding support on the bit. They typically perform better with bits with fixed rings, where they receive more support. However, more experienced horses are often ridden with bits with loose rings, as they provide a quicker release, making them also suitable for beginners on horseback.
The bit's thickness is 14mm and the diameter of the rings is 65mm.
