The VELARI Pelham Double Jointed Short Sweet Iron bit combines the functions of a snaffle and a curb in a thoughtful design. This bit offers both direct action in the mouth and a mild leverage effect through the short shanks, distributing pressure over the mouth, neck, and chin. The double-jointed mouthpiece ensures even pressure distribution over the tongue and bars, counteracting the nutcracker effect and providing a soft and stable feel. The construction is particularly suitable for horses with a lower palate, as it reduces pressure against the palate and increases comfort. The sweet iron material naturally oxidizes with use, promoting salivation and encouraging the horse to remain soft and accepting in the mouth. The bit can be used with two reins or with a converter to fine-tune the effect. A curb chain can be used for increased stability and a more even distribution of pressure.
The bit features short shanks, resulting in less leverage compared to a pelham bit with longer shanks. It is still a strong bit, but in a slightly milder form.
We recommend pelham bits for experienced riders with soft and responsive hands, as it requires both feel and knowledge to be used correctly.
