For a horse weighing approximately 500 kg, the daily salt requirement is estimated at 20–40 g under normal activity levels. During intense physical exertion, salt losses can be considerably higher. A horse working hard for one hour may lose up to 130 g of salt through sweating.
If salt losses are not replenished, the horse's fluid balance, performance and recovery may be affected. Prolonged sodium deficiency can impair the body's ability to retain water and may eventually contribute to dehydration, muscle cramps and reduced muscle function.
Adequate salt intake is also important during winter. When horses sweat less, their water intake may also decrease, making it essential to ensure both balanced salt supplementation and good access to drinking water.
