The silver color on the upper side of the blanket reflects sunlight and helps keep the temperature down, while the zebra stripes keep flies away, as research suggests that the pattern confuses them.
During a test, the number of flies attracted to a black, brown, white, and zebra-colored horse was examined. The black horse attracted 562 flies, the brown one 334, the white one 22, and the zebra-colored horse only 8!
