When horses graze in paddocks with little or no grass, they may ingest large amounts of sand and gravel, which can accumulate in the intestines and cause the horse to develop sand colic. Some horses become easily restless and then start nibbling on whatever they can find, which may lead to them ingesting items like pinecones and bark. To help the horse transport this unwanted material out of the intestines, psyllium seeds can be used.
The husks of psyllium seeds form a gel-like mass upon contact with moisture, effectively removing sand and gravel from the intestines. Psyllium has long been successfully used for this purpose in horses. It also positively affects intestinal function by maintaining healthy intestinal movements.
Psyllium should preferably be given with moist feed during meals. It can also be given dry, but ensure the horse has free access to water. The product should not be soaked beforehand, as the gel is most effective when formed inside the horse's digestive system.
