Silicon is a feed supplement that supports the development of the horse’s skin, coat, mane, hooves, tendons, and ligaments. It is used to complement the diet when natural intake of silicon is insufficient – a common scenario in forage-based feeding systems.
A lack of silicon may manifest as poor coat and mane quality, dry skin, or brittle hooves. Supplementing with silicon may also be beneficial during the rebuilding of tendons and ligaments, for example during recovery or after prolonged training.
When is Silicon appropriate?
- When the feed ration lacks sufficient silicon
- For horses with dry skin, dull coat, or brittle mane
- To support hoof quality and horn production
- For tendons and ligaments – during recovery or rebuilding
