Trikem's Copper+ is a copper supplement for horses used to balance the feed ration in cases of confirmed copper deficiency or excess iron. Copper is an essential trace element needed for the formation of hemoglobin, iron absorption, and the body's production of important substances such as elastin, collagen, and melanin – which affect both skin elasticity and coat pigmentation.
Copper+ is formulated to optimally balance the feed ration in the case of a copper deficiency or excess iron. The Fe:Cu ratio should be between 3–5 in the calculated feed ration.
What is the importance of copper for horses?
Copper contributes to the body's iron absorption and is important for the formation of hemoglobin – the red blood cells that transport oxygen. It is also crucial for enzymes involved in the production of elastin, collagen, and melanin – substances that protect the skin and affect its elasticity.
In addition, copper is necessary for bone development, joint surface structure, immune function, and coat pigmentation.
What does copper deficiency in horses mean?
Copper deficiency has been linked to an increased occurrence of osteochondrosis (loose bone fragments), especially in young horses. There is also a connection between copper deficiency and anemia, as copper is critical for blood formation. A common external symptom is a dull or faded coat color.
When is Copper+ recommended?
Copper+ is used when the feed analysis shows a copper deficiency or when the iron/copper ratio needs adjustment – for example, due to high iron levels in forage or water.
Dosage
For horses with copper deficiency or when copper is lacking in the feed ration. When forage contains high levels of iron, Copper+ can help balance the iron/copper ratio.
The iron/copper ratio should be between 3–5 in the calculated feed plan.
Standard dose – 3 ml per 100 kg body weight per day. Alternatively, according to feed analysis.
Example: 15 ml/day for a 500 kg horse.
