Trikem Phosphorous is a phosphorus supplement for horses. Phosphorus is an important mineral that is found in the skeleton, teeth and plays a central role in the horse's energy metabolism.
Phosphorus is part of the important calcium/phosphorus ratio and should always be fed in the correct relation to each other. An imbalance in the feed ration can negatively affect health. The appropriate ratio between calcium and phosphorus (Ca:P) is between 1.2:1 and 1.8:1. This is especially important for pregnant and lactating mares as well as for young, growing horses.
The importance of phosphorus
Phosphorus is a macromineral that is mostly stored in the skeleton, but it is important for the whole horse and its development:
- Bone formation
- Muscle function
- Cell energy metabolism
- Strength and health of teeth
Phosphorus deficiency
Phosphorus deficiency can lead to brittle bones, and if the deficiency persists for a long time it can also cause reduced appetite, stunted growth and decreased fertility.
The maintenance requirement of an adult horse is about 2.8 g of phosphorus per 100 kg body weight per day. Pregnant and lactating mares and growing horses have a higher requirement.
When is phosphorus recommended?
Phosphorus supplementation is recommended when the feed ration does not contain enough phosphorus or when the Ca:P ratio needs to be adjusted.
Dosage
Give when there is a lack of phosphorus in the feed ration. Dosage is based on calculated feed ration.
